23.

“This is most likely a trap.”

Twisting slightly, I turned to Vania. “I know.”

The blond warrior was walking beside me with confident steps but her face held a grim expression and her hand rested on her sword. She was worried. On my other side, Yngvild lumbered steadily while his watchful blue eyes constantly flicked back and forth across the street ahead, scanning for hidden threats. A large portion of my gang trailed behind us. Uneasiness hung like storm clouds over our whole party. They were all worried.

“I still think you should’ve turned it down,” Vania said.

“I couldn’t.” Turning my attention back to the darkened cobbled street ahead, I shrugged. “Not without looking like I was scared.”

She gave me a tense nod. Vania and the rest of my gang might not like my decision, but they understood it.

The day after we’d dropped explosive orbs on top of the people trying to steal from me, the Rat King had sent a message. In it, he had claimed to want a meeting to find a way to put an end to these hostilities but we all knew that there was more to it than that. The Rat King would never give up the iron grip he had on the Underworld and he would not stop until I knelt at his feet and offered him my submission. Which we both knew would never happen. So whatever this meeting was about, it was most likely a trap of some form or other. That didn’t change the fact that I still had to attend it, though.

The smell of rain on warm stones filled the air after the light summer rain that had blanketed Pernula last night and most of today. In the bright moonlight beaming down from the clear night sky, puddles shone like silver mirrors on the darkened streets. An anxious stillness hung over the area. Only the soft creaking of leather and rustle of weapons broke it as we made our way towards the huge square where the Rat King had tried to corner me two years ago. It had not ended well for him then, and it would not end well for him now.

Striding out of the alley mouth, I continued until I was sure that all my warriors had room to move into the square as well. They spread out like an armored wall behind me while I took in the area. Torches flickered along all four sides of the open space and another wall of people had gathered on the other side. A thin man at the front raised his arm.

All over the roofs on our side of the square, people popped up and leveled crossbows at us. I could almost feel the Rat King’s smirk from all the way on the other side as he lowered his arm but no one in my gang panicked or so much as shifted nervously. I let out a long whistle.

Figures materialized atop the buildings on the Rat King’s side as Yua and other stealthy people from my gang rose from the shadows like ghosts.
